Periodontal disease is an infection of the tissues that support the teeth which can also affect the bone on which the tooth depends for support. The word “periodontal” literally means “around the tooth. A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of periodontal disease.

The early stage of periodontal disease is called gingivitis. Gum disease is a silent, typically painless disease. Gums infected with periodontal disease are toxic reservoirs of disease-causing bacteria. Bacteria enter into the systemic circulation causing changes in blood vessel walls while promoting the production of atherosclerotic plaque. The process provokes an inflammatory response. Infections and toxins in the mouth have been linked to heart disease, stroke, bacteremia, prosthetic device infection, diabetes, pulmonary disease, impairment of fetal growth, and other systemic diseases.

Gum disease is linked to general health. Dr. Charles Mayo, founder of the Mayo Clinic is purported to have said that preventive dentistry can extend your life expectancy 10 years! Periodontal therapy will remove debris and bacteria from the site, allowing your gums to heal. Periodontal disease requires regular dental treatments and rigorous homecare procedures.
