Lou Gehrig’s , amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or motor neuron disease is a horrifying degenerative nerve disease that works its way up your body stealing movement and feeling inch by inch until you are no longer able to even breathe on your own. It is a neurological disease that affects the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord responsible for controlling voluntary muscles. Possible signs and symptoms of Lou Gehrig’s disease include: difficulty in lifting the front part of your foot, weakness in your legs, feet or ankles, weakness or clumsiness in your hands, slurred speech and/or trouble swallowing, muscle cramps, twitching in your arms, shoulders or tongue, fatigue in combination with any of the above signs.. It affect the caregivers as well as the person afflicted with it. Lou Gehrig’s disease afflicts the muscles of the body leaving the speech, feelings, brain and thought process unaffected.

 

 

Parkinson’s is a disorder affecting nerve cells in the part of the brain controlling muscle movement as the result of dopamine production. By the time Parkinson’s is diagnosed, people have already lost 60 to 70 percent of the dopamine-producing cells. It is rare in people younger than forty. Having difficulty in such things as dressing, shaving, bathing, writing, getting in and out of the car, and even eating are results of this condition. As Alzheimer’s destroys the mind, leaving the body intact and functioning, Parkinson’s destroys the body’s ability to function, taking away the physical abilities necessary to daily life, while leaving the mind a prisoner inside the body. Different mutations in single gene suggest Parkinson’s is primarily an inherited genetic condition. Since the late 1980s, many studies have shown over and over again that a common thread among those who suffer from Parkinson’s is a history of exposure to insecticides and herbicides.
